Rectangular Signet Ring | Jewellery Making Tutorial | Goldsmith's Workshop Secrets
This week we're looking at the making of this flattop ring in 18ct yellow gold - made using the client's old gold.
What fun, also the personalisation of the top! With two olive branches engraved and a diamond set (also sentimental, provided by the client). What would you call this style of ring? Damia and I were talking about it... Flattop or rectangular signet ring? Or something else? Enlighten us!
A simple video this week but we hope you're able to take a little something away with you. Got some more, exciting videos coming up with things that we've made since opening the shop and hopefully, a few more hing ring conversions as well.
Thanks for tuning in! If you like this kind of thing and...

This week we’re making a three stone diamond ring 💍 We were asked to remove these diamonds from the old ring because the client wanted a platinum ring where she could have the confidence that the stones were secure and the settings were appropriate for the stones they supported. o, what happens when remodelling old gold doesn’t quite go to plan? In this video we tell the story of such a case. We melted down some sentimental jewellery to make my gold signet rings and halfway through the process - the gold started CRACKING (but don’t worry, there’s a positive ending to this story!) We needed to change course and that’s exactly what we’ve done. Hopefully, you’ll find this...

What a pleasant surprise, a Jeweler on RUclips who actually knows what he’s talking about. I was delighted to stumble across your channel recently and I have enjoyed watching your tutorials. I learned my trade through an apprenticeship in Dublin Ireland in the mid 1960’s, I also worked in Hatton Garden before moving to the US in 1971. It’s nice to hear the old terms like chenier and triblet used again. Your style of work is pretty much identical to my own, and I would advise anyone who strives to become a professional jeweler to study your tutorials carefully and work to develop the various skills that make a fine Jeweler. My craft has served me very well over a span of 62 years and at the age of 77 I still work at my bench every day. More importantly, I still enjoy my work and all the challenges it presents. Thank you Jaco, for taking the time to produce these tutorials and for keeping our craft alive for a new generation. Terry Walsh

You have such a beautifully descriptive way of explaining and showing what your do, I feel like it’s not metal or jewellery to you the further you get into a project it’s more like art and I love that, I could only dream of making things like this one day. Can I ask would you ever Make multiple claw setting or say a split shank using 2 separate pieces of wire or multiple pieces? I only ask because maybe that would be more easy to manipulate the metal that way or would it not? Sorry I’m naively asking? Thank you again for a beautiful tutorial 🙏🥰

It just reacts better. The nature of the metal allows for this method - it creates a seamless joint which makes it stand out. Today with laser technology however, the principle applies in much the same way. It allows to fill joints without solder in just about every metal which is ideal

Thanks for this video! Although, you should know that in calligraphy, it is the descending lines that should be thicker that the ascending lines. Meaning each times your pen goes up it's thin, each time your pen goes down, it's thick. It's due to the old dipping pen that would flare out every time you descend. So this would be the exact opposite of what you've done. Hope this help!
